Writing for Love and Money: How to Become a Successful Romance Writer

A creative writing exercise

A creative writing exercise that can be used by us
adults as well as our children
to sharpen or writing skills.

Literacy is a growing and a major concern throughout the world. Although this exercise is designed to help writers, it can benefit everyone by way of helping him or her to write better.

Try this exercise and have fun with it.

Writers don't necessarily have more secret lives than other people. What they do possess is an acute sense of awareness. Not to mention the most vivid and frequently colorful imaginations imaginable.

When I was in college, my writing professor had this creative writing project that asked the writer to look inside and find his/her five secret lives.

The ultimate goal here is to write from each perspective. Limiting the list to five assured that everyone completed this project in a timely manner. Take the time to develop each character as an individual. Use exercise to hone in on and sharpen writing skills, as well as warm up for the "Big Project".

Disliking limitations of any kind as I do, I went a bit further with this project. I invite you to join me in this creative excursion. You are responsible for bringing your own personalities and props. Hats and gloves are optional, but remember tiaras are always in season.

Once you've completed your list of "five," take one character and write from his/her prospective. I titled mine "My life as _____________ (fill in the blank)"

My "five" secret lives:

Writer ~

This part of me is always writing, revising and editing not only the works written but my entire life. Sometimes totally opposite to reality of what they are or represent.

Bookworm ~

This part of me is always reading all the time and trying to learn anything and everything. Occasionally she looks up and looks around her surroundings and yawns.

Psychic - {forever in training} ~

Always seeking to learn more of her ever developing psychic abilities and feeling stressed due to lack of rapid understanding.

Brat ~

Always the practical joker. Brat likes to get attention and play pranks on people or do what ever it takes to make someone laugh or at least smile.

Counselor ~

The stern and serious counselor within me is always there with sofa in hand to counsel or console someone in need, and more often than not neglects her own needs and desires.

((With all these people running around inside my brain, no wonder I have mood swings.))

With all this commotion going on, I've decided it might be a good time to take a vacation. Just remember to pack for six! {smiles}

This exercise is good for not only adults who write, but can also be a valuable asset to students both in High School or even Junior High School, not to mention college.
